MTSBA's Training Services
The Value of Training

Serving on a school board is one of the most difficult and rewarding jobs in the nation.  Volunteers are working on behalf of the public, ensuring the children of our communities receive a free, quality, public education.

Basic training for school boards helps to prepare you to effectively manage the following school board fundamentals: roles and responsibilities of the board; board meeting procedures; basic school law; employment practices; school finance and budgets; and the function of public education.

Our Pledge to Our Members

We pledge to make every possible effort to ensure that our members have the tools they need to make a positive affect in their schools and communities.  We will provide high-quality training presented by knowledgeable and experienced staff in a positive group environment.

Levels of Expertise

We will be assigning a specific level of expertise to each workshop to help you decide what workshops will best fit your educational needs beginning with our Back to School Legal Primer in August. The following levels will be assigned as follows:

Beginner: Developed for those who have little or no knowledge of the areas covered.

Intermediate: Developed for those with general knowledge of the subject matter covered.

Advanced: Developed for those who have thorough knowledge of the subject matter covered.

We will also address what audience our workshops focus on, such as trustees, superintendents, business managers, business administrators and teaching staff.

MTSBA feels it is important to clearly identify which training venues are most appropriate for our member's needs and hopes that this will help address that need.

We provide several options to assist your school board in getting valuable, necessary training:

Basic In-District Training (MTSBA staff will travel to your district and present the workshops your are interested in):

bullet MTSBA offers in-district, whole-board training programs that allow for one-on-one training for school boards.  with an increasing demand for site-specific training, we have increased our topic offerings and have developed new training venues for school boards.  All of our presentations include a manual, applicable to your specific district issues, and time for a question and answer session.

Training Express (choose multiple training venues while committing to board development as a group):

Due to the increased demand for on-going training and board member development, MTSBA has developed Training Express.  This program is unique in that it allows the board to choose multiple training venues and to commit to development as a group.  Your leadership team will receive the following:

bullet Four customized 1/2 day (4-hour) workshops presented in your district on topics of your choice, on dates and times that are convenient to your district
bullet Complimentary attendance of your entire leadership team (all trustees, superintendents, clerks) at MTSBA's Best of MCEL, Winter RIF, Legal Primer and Spring Workshops
bullet Certified staff renewal credits
bullet School Board Academy Certification for your entire board
bullet One-year subscription to the Montana Education Law Reporter (MELR)
